Abstract

【Abstract】 This essay presents a comparative analysis of the third series of the animated TV series Gegege no Kitaro broadcast from 1985 to 1988, in comparison with the original manga and previous series. This third series is a remake of the original manga and previous series. Not only was it remade by a brand-new production team and casts, but the remake also underwent major changes. These changes will be elucidated based on the project proposal and interviews. The most significant change is in the distance between humans and yokai --Japanese apparitions. in the original works, yokai lived in harmony with human life. In the third series, however, yokai are seen as a symbolic of nature being destroyed by humans, and the separation of the two is noticeable. The intention of the production team was to depict a rational and barren society through the conflict between humans and yokai. The series' production team's intention was to depict a rational and sterile society through the conflict between humans and yokai.
